Baseball has both the oldest and youngest players of any pro athletic

Seth Kadish of the blog Vizual Statistix has charted the youngest and oldest professional in four major sports leagues for each year — MLB( ), NHL( hockey ), NFL( ), and NBA( basketball) — going back to 1918.

Of the four leagues, baseball tends to have by far the oldest players — though other leagues have taken over that distinction at a few phases in history. The MLB also tended to have the youngest players for the first half of the 20 th Century, though the NHL now does. Overall, the minimum ages tend to vary a lot less than the maximum ages the youngest players are between 18 and 20, while the oldest players range into their 30 s and 40 s.
